Lei Back and Relax: New Years in Oahu!

Wait, what? Did I take a toddler on an 11 hour long haul flight to Hawaii?

Yes, yes I did. Tips for long haul travel with a toddler coming soon! 😊😉

One condition I gave my husband upon moving to the northeast was that we had to take at least  one tropical vacation 🌞 each winter to escape the cold. My southern bones just can't handle weeks on weeks of freezing temperatures (it's a fact). ❆ So this year, we decided to head to Hawaii

Hawaii holds a special place in my family's heart. My husband and I both went before we got together, we went alone early in our marriage, and we've been dying to go back with our son. Based on flight prices, we decided to go to Oahu! We stayed in the center of Honolulu at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The reviews online are really varied and spotty 😵, but we felt comfortable with it because 1) we had tons of Hilton Honors points we could use to pay for it, and 2) my husband had stayed there before and knew it wasn't that bad.

The location and amenities of the Hilton Hawaiian Village are unbeatable. There are 18 restaurants, 5 pools, and a man-made lagoon beside it which is protected from waves and hosts water sports! They also have their own dock called “Port Hilton” where they offer a handful of boat excursions each day.

When it comes to the actual rooms (and the negative reviews), I absolutely think it matters which tower you stay in. After doing a little more research, I had my heart set on the Ali’i tower – the luxury tower on the property. It's smaller, has its own check in, has its own private pool, bar and gym, and comes with higher end toiletries and a Keurig! ⛾

The private pool (far less crowded than the other resort pools)

Other perks were an on-site ABC Store (basically a 7/11 and Walmart combo), tons of good restaurants nearby, as well as being near the luxury Waikiki shopping district. Some restaurants at the Hilton that deserve to be mentioned are Tropics (by the pools), Hatsuhana (best sushi I've had since living in Asia), and BlueWater Shrimp & Seafood (get the pineapple smoothie - served in a fresh pineapple!).

Some of our favorite activities during this part of our stay were: riding the Aqua-cycle in Hilton's lagoon, attending the Starlight Luau on property (upgrade to the Diamond seating!), having a Mai Tai at the famous Duke's Waikiki, and watching the Friday fireworks at 7:45, which were incredible. (We had the added bonus of seeing New Years Eve’s fireworks too!)

The luau was hula-rious (get it?)
My happy place was watching the surfers from our table at Duke's

We stayed at the Hilton for 5 nights, and I can honestly say we were never bored. Due to the timing of our trip (holiday/peak season) and our last minute planning (we booked 3 weeks in advance), we weren't able to do several typical Oahu experiences, but I'll list them here for you anyway! My future Oahu to-do list includes:

The sunset on Hilton's beach 😍

Next, we did something I don't normally do on vacations. We switched hotels.

Cancun: All-Inclusive or Nah?

For Christmas 2016, we decided we needed a warm , relaxing, and affordable vacation, so we chose Cancun. This trip surprised me in many ways. I was totally off my game that week and we forgot our GoPro, so we don’t have many pictures. 🙁 I like to think we were just living in the moment and enjoying ourselves. I don't come empty-handed though; I have a ton of tips about cheap accommodation, tours, and food! The first decision to make was “ Should we stay at an all-inclusive ”? All-inclusives are tricky. I know people who swear by them and stay at them for every vacation. I think there’s a time and place for all-inclusives, and you just have to decide what kind of trip you want. If you want to veg out with friends or you are on your honeymoon and don’t plan to leave the resort at all, then yes by all means, an all-inclusive is the way to go. Food, drinks, and bed all in one place. No judgment here. BUT , me and my husband usually aren’t that type of vacatio...

Ciao, Ni hao, Hola

Hi fellow travelers! You are probably wondering who I am, why I am starting this, and why you should read it! So here goes nothin': Who)  I'm Katie R., a southern girl who decided to take a chance and see what else life had to offer. Raised in Mississippi/Louisiana, I first got the taste of culture and overseas travel in 2009 when I went on a mission trip to Haiti, and I caught the travel bug. In 2012, I took a job and  moved to  Singapore . I didn't know a soul, had 3 nights booked in a hotel and no plans after that, and was living on a prayer (all this is a story for another time). There, I learned to enjoy everyone and everything around me, and now I travel as much as humanly possible. Luckily, I met a man who also has wanderlust and hasn't slowed me down one bit! Aren't we cute? Why)  When I moved to Singapore in 2012, my best friend told me to start a blog. I was so scared of failing (with the blog and the move) that I didn't write it, and it's ...

The Legend of the Hidden Temples: Myanmar Edition

This week while brainstorming what to write about, I found pictures on an old phone from our trip to MYANMAR in August 2015! It's truly one of the most unique and untouched countries I've ever seen! Many people haven't even heard of the country, let alone want to travel there, so I hope this post will bring awareness to how awesome Myanmar (used to be called Burma) is! A little background : Myanmar is next door to Thailand on the left, but it is described as being 40 years behind Thailand (in terms of development). Ever since I moved to Asia in 2012, I dreamt of going to there, but it was closed to tourists and a visa was nearly impossible to get (which made it even more intriguing!). ☹ In 2014, they opened their borders (woohooooooo!), and I knew I had to make a trip ASAP. The visa process also became available online, even better! I'm not sure about now, but when I applied I had to have a Burmese travel agency sponsor/sign off for me. I think this was their ...
