Aulani: Disney's Hawaiian Resort

After our time in Honolulu, we switched hotels! This time, we chose 3 nights at the Disney resort on the island called Aulani. I didn't even know Aulani existed until recently, and I’m really happy we came! 🐭

Disney is polarizing. I know some of you are cringing and others want to know everything (this blog is for the latter group 😆)! I'm happy to report that Aulani wasn’t obnoxiously Disney at all – truly. It was a 5 star, classic looking resort with a beach, 5+ pools, a lazy river, 9+ restaurants that just happened to be owned by Disney. If you wanted to see and feel Disney, you could do that too, but it wasn’t shoved in your face at all times. There were several different room types; we stayed in a typical room that closely resembled the Polynesian resort at Disney World! It was spacious and comfortable.

We made it!

As you'd expect, Aulani was very family-friendly with so many fun activities! The resort was at capacity (100%) while we were there, but I was surprised to find that it wasn't uncomfortable. We never had to wait at a restaurant and never had trouble finding pool chairs. First, let's get into the fun! 🙌 Unfortunately for us, the kid's camp was for ages 4 and up, so we barely missed the cut off - but we still had a blast. For those ages, they have several camps and also one-off events like Mickey ear decorating, fire pit story-telling, excursions, snorkeling in a lagoon, and a Hawaiian version of the "Bippity Boppity Boutique". We still kept ourselves busy with character meet and greets, the pools, and our family's favorite: the lazy river! No matter where you look, there is something to do! 🏊

Now let's talk about the food! As you can imagine, all restaurants on property were amazing for kids food. 🥪We did the classic Disney character breakfast at Makahiki, lunch at Off The Hook, and on our last night, we splurged for the fanciest meal I’ve ever had at AMA AMA with the most beautiful views. It was a 4-course menu full of steak, seafood, and local favorites. It was not frugal (the kids prix fixe dinner was $55!), but it was something my family will always remember! 😍

While the resort is great, I'd also recommend exploring off-site! There's a great little shopping center across the street that has an ABC store and several good restaurants and ice cream shops! We ate at both Monkeypod (get the famous Mai Tai) and Mekiko Cantina (great happy hour!) – both were delicious.

While I could go on and on, I'll close with a few tips for visiting Aulani:

  • Consider waiting until kids are 4 to be able to get the full experience (but I have no regrets going earlier than that) ❹
  • There's no need to bring pool toys, as they’re not allowed (which was actually really nice)
  • Waters are not provided in your room (so run across the street to the ABC store to buy cheap waters). Buy a refillable resort cup; it's ~$20 and includes unlimited fountain drinks and water for your whole trip. It also makes a cute souvenir! 🥤
  • Download the Aulani app for dining reservations (check often because they change constantly!), to book kid activities, and to check timings for the character meet and greets for that day. 📱
  • Have low expectations, give your kids grace, and have fun!

Splurge for the cup!

Stunning sunsets at Aulani!

Ciao, Ni hao, Hola

Hi fellow travelers! You are probably wondering who I am, why I am starting this, and why you should read it! So here goes nothin': Who)  I'm Katie R., a southern girl who decided to take a chance and see what else life had to offer. Raised in Mississippi/Louisiana, I first got the taste of culture and overseas travel in 2009 when I went on a mission trip to Haiti, and I caught the travel bug. In 2012, I took a job and  moved to  Singapore . I didn't know a soul, had 3 nights booked in a hotel and no plans after that, and was living on a prayer (all this is a story for another time). There, I learned to enjoy everyone and everything around me, and now I travel as much as humanly possible. Luckily, I met a man who also has wanderlust and hasn't slowed me down one bit! Aren't we cute? Why)  When I moved to Singapore in 2012, my best friend told me to start a blog. I was so scared of failing (with the blog and the move) that I didn't write it, and it's ...

Cancun: All-Inclusive or Nah?

For Christmas 2016, we decided we needed a warm , relaxing, and affordable vacation, so we chose Cancun. This trip surprised me in many ways. I was totally off my game that week and we forgot our GoPro, so we don’t have many pictures. 🙁 I like to think we were just living in the moment and enjoying ourselves. I don't come empty-handed though; I have a ton of tips about cheap accommodation, tours, and food! The first decision to make was “ Should we stay at an all-inclusive ”? All-inclusives are tricky. I know people who swear by them and stay at them for every vacation. I think there’s a time and place for all-inclusives, and you just have to decide what kind of trip you want. If you want to veg out with friends or you are on your honeymoon and don’t plan to leave the resort at all, then yes by all means, an all-inclusive is the way to go. Food, drinks, and bed all in one place. No judgment here. BUT , me and my husband usually aren’t that type of vacatio...

Eat, Drink, and be Maui

~ Aloha ~ Most of you know already that Jon and I go on an "annual honeymoon". It’s usual somewhere warm and romantic, and it’s more of a splurge than our normal trips. This year was a tough choice between Portugal and Hawaii, but on a whim, we decided to go to Hawaii – and boy, was it awesome! We’d both been to Hawaii before (him to Oahu and me to Maui), so we picked Maui based on flight prices. We booked the resort through Amex (we have a Platinum card and it has the best benefits – seriously check it out here !) and got a great deal on the Waldorf Astoria Grand Wailea resort ( P.S. it's a Hilton partner, so you get all the Hilton Honors perks - aka free upgrade, free breakfast, resort credit, etc. ). I heard that this resort was “ Disney World for Adults ”, and I’d agree. This was the best resort I’ve ever stayed it – and that says a lot!! I could easily go on and on about this vacation, but I’ll spare you and give you the cliff notes version. I’ve put ...
