#monthlydose of Dry January

This year I'm going to try something new. I always research healthy habits to try but never fully follow through, so each month this year, I will challenge myself to a new healthy habit - like a monthly dose of medicine. When the month is over, I’ll write a #Monthlydose blog about how it went and what mental, physical, and emotional effects the new habit provides.

First up: the ever-popular Dry January. I love (and I mean LOVE) a happy hour with friends or a nice bottle of wine with dinner, but it’s happened a little too casually and frequently lately. So I decided to try dry January, which means no alcohol all month and is traditionally used to detox from holiday eating and to start the year out healthier. Honestly, it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. It helped that I was busy at work, sick for a week, and that my husband was supportive and participated too. I also had several friends that were doing Dry January, so I had support and accountability, which is super important.

Now, before anyone calls me out, I have a disclaimer: it would be more accurate to call this Moist January. Mostly dry, but not completely. I did cheat and drink a couple times this month for special occasions, so sue me. Instead of beating myself up about it or quitting the challenge altogether, it helped to remember that the point of this isn't to deprive myself of joy or to be legalistic, but to instill a healthier lifestyle in small, realistic ways. So Moist January it is.

So, how did it work out?

·  •   I lost weight and felt less bloated. This was not intentional or anticipated or even desired, but it’s true: all of those empty calories really do weigh us down. If you drink frequently and are interested in dropping a couple pounds, I think this is a good place to start!
·  •  We saved money. We saved alot by not drinking when we went out for dinner or happy hours. I guessed that we saved atleast $200, but Jon (who is way better at finances than I am) estimates higher. Either way, we’ll gladly put that money into savings each month!
·  •   It forced me to deal with stress in other ways. Instead of having a glass of wine after work to de-stress, I turned to other things: a bubble bath, chatting with friends or family, reading, writing, and sleeping (not to mention one of the nights I cheated was the worst night of sleep the entire month). This month has made me much more aware of when I feel stressed and how I deal with it.
I realized how much we drank unnecessarily. This month has made me change my focus to having a drink primarily for special occasions (and not just for a random Tuesday). It sounds so cliché, but you really don’t have to drink to have fun!

So, what happens now?

I’ll try to keep the mindset and drinking schedule I’ve had this month, focus on healthier ways to deal with stress, and take more bubble baths. It’s not that I won’t drink anymore; I’ll have a drink when it’s called for and try not to drink when it’s unnecessary. Overall, Moist January has had many good aspects, but….

More than anything, I think it starts the year with confidence that
a small discipline can lead to bigger ones in the future.

What should I try next?

Ciao, Ni hao, Hola

Hi fellow travelers! You are probably wondering who I am, why I am starting this, and why you should read it! So here goes nothin': Who)  I'm Katie R., a southern girl who decided to take a chance and see what else life had to offer. Raised in Mississippi/Louisiana, I first got the taste of culture and overseas travel in 2009 when I went on a mission trip to Haiti, and I caught the travel bug. In 2012, I took a job and  moved to  Singapore . I didn't know a soul, had 3 nights booked in a hotel and no plans after that, and was living on a prayer (all this is a story for another time). There, I learned to enjoy everyone and everything around me, and now I travel as much as humanly possible. Luckily, I met a man who also has wanderlust and hasn't slowed me down one bit! Aren't we cute? Why)  When I moved to Singapore in 2012, my best friend told me to start a blog. I was so scared of failing (with the blog and the move) that I didn't write it, and it's ...

Cancun: All-Inclusive or Nah?

For Christmas 2016, we decided we needed a warm , relaxing, and affordable vacation, so we chose Cancun. This trip surprised me in many ways. I was totally off my game that week and we forgot our GoPro, so we don’t have many pictures. 🙁 I like to think we were just living in the moment and enjoying ourselves. I don't come empty-handed though; I have a ton of tips about cheap accommodation, tours, and food! The first decision to make was “ Should we stay at an all-inclusive ”? All-inclusives are tricky. I know people who swear by them and stay at them for every vacation. I think there’s a time and place for all-inclusives, and you just have to decide what kind of trip you want. If you want to veg out with friends or you are on your honeymoon and don’t plan to leave the resort at all, then yes by all means, an all-inclusive is the way to go. Food, drinks, and bed all in one place. No judgment here. BUT , me and my husband usually aren’t that type of vacatio...

Eat, Drink, and be Maui

~ Aloha ~ Most of you know already that Jon and I go on an "annual honeymoon". It’s usual somewhere warm and romantic, and it’s more of a splurge than our normal trips. This year was a tough choice between Portugal and Hawaii, but on a whim, we decided to go to Hawaii – and boy, was it awesome! We’d both been to Hawaii before (him to Oahu and me to Maui), so we picked Maui based on flight prices. We booked the resort through Amex (we have a Platinum card and it has the best benefits – seriously check it out here !) and got a great deal on the Waldorf Astoria Grand Wailea resort ( P.S. it's a Hilton partner, so you get all the Hilton Honors perks - aka free upgrade, free breakfast, resort credit, etc. ). I heard that this resort was “ Disney World for Adults ”, and I’d agree. This was the best resort I’ve ever stayed it – and that says a lot!! I could easily go on and on about this vacation, but I’ll spare you and give you the cliff notes version. I’ve put ...
