Official Jersey City Foodie Tour

SURPRISE POST!

Home!
My in-laws recently came to visit us in Jersey City, NJ (and NYC). The fact that Jersey City is the cutest place ever and has amazing food is not new to us, but I was really inspired and happy to see how much E+F (my in-laws) enjoyed it, so I thought I would share their experience! We had a great family weekend together centered around amazing food and drinks!

Disclaimer: I did not intend for this to be a blog post by any means. I am not claiming these are the "best" or nicest restaurants in Jersey City; we just wanted to take them to some of our favorite spots we've found living here over the past 6 months, and they loved them more than we expected!!

Friday, we met them at their hotel in Jersey City (the new Marriott near Grove Street, which I would give 5 stars btw!). We walked along the Hudson River to grab a pre-dinner beer at the brand new Lutze Biergardten. It is the cutest outdoor space with a cool vibe, good beer, food trucks, music and games. If you're local, you gotta check it out: link here! 🍺

We continued walking to Batello--- a beautiful, rustic italian restaurant sitting on the water near Newport (link here). My in-laws treated us to this fantastic meal for our 1 year wedding anniversary, and we FEASTED on oysters, fresh seafood, homemade pasta, wine, and the highlight --- Flourless Chocolate cake with coconut Ice cream and butter scotch sauce. 🎂 Literally the best cake I've ever put in my mouth. We will definitely be back!

Can we take a moment to meditate on this amazing choc cake 👏
The next day (Saturday), we toured around the New  York City visiting the WTC, 9/11 Museum, and the top of the Empire State Building, and had a quick burger lunch in the city. In the late afternoon, we made our way back to Jersey City to rest up before continuing what became our "Official JC Foodie Tour". First, we made a stop at our favorite local microbrewery, Departed Soles, for a tasting (flight). Check out the link to scope out this cute place! My husband is gluten-free, so to have a rad GF brewery nearby has been a treat!

Everyone found something they loved, so we moved on to dinner at Talde just three blocks away. Our in-laws like P.F. Chang/Asian-fusion type foods, so we thought Talde would be great. We ordered several family-style dishes and shared them all. Everything I've ever had there has been delicious, but this time, I really enjoyed the Lobster Tom Kha, Korean Fried Chicken (it's GLUTEN FREEEEEE!!!!!), and the Crab Fried Rice. 🍲🍴 The restaurant is owned by famous chef Dale Talde, and there are a couple other locations I believe (link here). Everything had rich flavors, and we all left stuffed and happy!!! #musttry

The next day was Mothers Day. We took E+F to our church in the city, where they got the privilege to see THE Tim Keller preach. The day was off to a great start! We decided to treat them to brunch at Amelia's (link), our favorite and very frequented brunch in our neighboyhood back in JC! This isn't the fanciest or most expensive restaurant, but we have grown to love and treasure the owners, service, and $4 mimosas! 🍷 It's also 1 block from our apartment --- a huge perk that we don't have to stumble too far home after all the brunch cocktails :) We ordered Shrimp and Grits, Avocado Toast, bellinis, bloodies, and more. We topped it off with a walk around the marina and neighborhood, enjoying the beautiful day.

Again, this is just a brief summary of our recent experience. It is not comprehensive, and in fact, we're still trying new restaurants in JC nearly every week. Feel free to come visit Jersey City (and us) and try some of these restaurants/bars- I know you'll LOVE them. Or if you've been here before, we're taking suggestions and recommendations of YOUR favorites! Comment below!

Though our visit with E+F was short, it was sweet. Jon and I enjoyed showing them a glimpse of the beautiful life we have created here, and I think they enjoyed it too. I'm almost positive that everyone left that day with happy bellies and full hearts. ❤

Cancun: All-Inclusive or Nah?

For Christmas 2016, we decided we needed a warm , relaxing, and affordable vacation, so we chose Cancun. This trip surprised me in many ways. I was totally off my game that week and we forgot our GoPro, so we don’t have many pictures. 🙁 I like to think we were just living in the moment and enjoying ourselves. I don't come empty-handed though; I have a ton of tips about cheap accommodation, tours, and food! The first decision to make was “ Should we stay at an all-inclusive ”? All-inclusives are tricky. I know people who swear by them and stay at them for every vacation. I think there’s a time and place for all-inclusives, and you just have to decide what kind of trip you want. If you want to veg out with friends or you are on your honeymoon and don’t plan to leave the resort at all, then yes by all means, an all-inclusive is the way to go. Food, drinks, and bed all in one place. No judgment here. BUT , me and my husband usually aren’t that type of vacatio...

Ciao, Ni hao, Hola

Hi fellow travelers! You are probably wondering who I am, why I am starting this, and why you should read it! So here goes nothin': Who)  I'm Katie R., a southern girl who decided to take a chance and see what else life had to offer. Raised in Mississippi/Louisiana, I first got the taste of culture and overseas travel in 2009 when I went on a mission trip to Haiti, and I caught the travel bug. In 2012, I took a job and  moved to  Singapore . I didn't know a soul, had 3 nights booked in a hotel and no plans after that, and was living on a prayer (all this is a story for another time). There, I learned to enjoy everyone and everything around me, and now I travel as much as humanly possible. Luckily, I met a man who also has wanderlust and hasn't slowed me down one bit! Aren't we cute? Why)  When I moved to Singapore in 2012, my best friend told me to start a blog. I was so scared of failing (with the blog and the move) that I didn't write it, and it's ...

The Legend of the Hidden Temples: Myanmar Edition

This week while brainstorming what to write about, I found pictures on an old phone from our trip to MYANMAR in August 2015! It's truly one of the most unique and untouched countries I've ever seen! Many people haven't even heard of the country, let alone want to travel there, so I hope this post will bring awareness to how awesome Myanmar (used to be called Burma) is! A little background : Myanmar is next door to Thailand on the left, but it is described as being 40 years behind Thailand (in terms of development). Ever since I moved to Asia in 2012, I dreamt of going to there, but it was closed to tourists and a visa was nearly impossible to get (which made it even more intriguing!). ☹ In 2014, they opened their borders (woohooooooo!), and I knew I had to make a trip ASAP. The visa process also became available online, even better! I'm not sure about now, but when I applied I had to have a Burmese travel agency sponsor/sign off for me. I think this was their ...
