Hi fellow travelers! You are probably wondering who I am, why I am starting this, and why you should read it! So here goes nothin':
Who) I'm Katie R., a southern girl who decided to take a chance and see what else life had to offer. Raised in Mississippi/Louisiana, I first got the taste of culture and overseas travel in 2009 when I went on a mission trip to Haiti, and I caught the travel bug. In 2012, I took a job and moved to Singapore. I didn't know a soul, had 3 nights booked in a hotel and no plans after that, and was living on a prayer (all this is a story for another time). There, I learned to enjoy everyone and everything around me, and now I travel as much as humanly possible. Luckily, I met a man who also has wanderlust and hasn't slowed me down one bit! Aren't we cute?
Why) When I moved to Singapore in 2012, my best friend told me to start a blog. I was so scared of failing (with the blog and the move) that I didn't write it, and it's one of my biggest regrets. Many people asked me to start a blog recently, even though I felt like it was too late. I finally decided to in January 2017 because a) I want to document our travels for our family and future kiddos, b) people constantly ask me for travel advice and I can send them here instead of repeating stories a million times, and c) to motivate friends and family who don't travel often. Traveling doesn't have to be complicated... or expensive... and it really is the best "school" life has to offer.
The name "Fancy but Frugal" was chosen because my husband has always used that phrase to describe me (he likes alliteration), and it really is applicable in every aspect. This is not a blog to teach you how to travel to Antarctica on $3.43 per day. It's a Kinda-Budget Really-Good-Value travel blog. We aim to enjoy our travels.... because if you don't, then what's the point? However, I have gotten a kick out of snagging good deals lately, like our last trip to Cancun where we stayed at resorts and went to all-inclusives for 1/3 of the price others paid, and left Mexico over $500 under our already modest budget. That, my friends, is happiness!
My travel style has evolved over the years from traveling with groups, to backpacking, to road trips, and it will continue to change (especially when we start to travel with kids even though people say we can't!). I'm also notoriously famous for only using a carry-on for 2-3 week long trips (a blog post about that will be coming up soon 😊 ).
At the start of this blog I have around 28 countries under my belt. Some are volunteer trips, mission trips, and plain ole tourist trips. I will be posting about past trips and future trips as they happen. Click here to see which countries I have visited, and tell me what locations you would like me to blog about first? Myanmar? New Zealand? Iceland? Our recent adult only Disney World/Orlando trip? Let me know!
Lastly, a huge thank you to the very sweet and supportive friends (and husband) who encouraged me to start this. Whether 1 or 100 people read it, memories fade and I will be really happy to look back on our travels when we are swinging on a porch in 50 years!
XOXO
